Psalm 84 study - THE SURPASSER



I struggled with this message and only after finishing I got the message

Lord God Mighty and Majestic be our vision, be the center, be our Superceedor, Supplanter,
Leg Puller and Surpasser, we commit this time to you now, in Jesus precious name Amen

Now before we start lets look at the meanings of the name Jacob

Now Jacob in Hebrew which means "heel-catcher" or "supplanter." I cannot type the
Hebrew name here with this keyboard but I,ll type it in the English type d3eikab

Supplanter in hebrew is Machlif, "to supersede" or to "take the place of"

We shall be going through the definitions of Jacobs name one by one and relating it too this Psalm

And to our lifes as Christians, personally,

The name Jacob means too Surpass, Leg puller, Supplant, Supercede, ...............

Now in this message we are looking at imagery to implant a simple picture in our minds about
the story of Jacob, one way to remember a story is by relating it to our own lifes ! And to begin with another simple picture of John the Baptist relating to our lifes


AND ME - you see it changes as Christ supplants more and more of Himself into us Into me
and you _ so we become more Christlike and that which is surplanted in us prepares us for
the Groom and so the two become one, as one

So remember as the study goes on so the character of Jacob becomes you and me

Although we are skipping through Psalms 82,83 and 84, this message is based on Psalm 84
a psalm of the descendants of Korah So lets begin by reading Psalm 84

Psalm 84 (New International Version)

For the director of music. According to gittith. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm. 1 How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD Almighty!

2 My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.

3 Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may have her young— a place near your altar, O LORD Almighty, my King and
my God.

4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you. Selah

5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on pilgrimage.

6 As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a place of springs;
the autumn rains also cover it with pools.

7 They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.

8 Hear my prayer, O LORD God Almighty; listen to me, O God of Jacob. Selah

9 Look upon our shield, O God; look with favor on your anointed one.

10 Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor;
no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.

12 O LORD Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in you.


And so we come to the valley of Baca and this place cannot be associated with any place that
we know of, it cannot be placed on a map and is more a place of the heart

The Valley of Baca is the "valley of tears" and it can also be referred too as the "Desert"
or "wilderness" A place of solitude where it is dry and barren where there is no rain to quench and where the tears fall

This valley of baca was the place journeyed through on the way to the Temple mentioned in Psalm
84:6, it was known as the valley of tears

This was the valley on the way to the Temple mentioned in this Psalm by the sons of korah who
were Temple assistants

And we too find that on our journey towards the Temple of Gods people a place in our lifes where
we find the "valley of weeping" or "The valley of the Desert" - (wilderness)

Psalm 107:33-38 here in the cross reference we see that God can turn the rivers into desert and deserts into pools of water

He gives and takes away............


Psalm 82:5 (New American Standard Bible)

5They do not know nor do they understand; They walk about in darkness;
All the foundations of the earth are shaken. Now lets go to a picture of John the Baptist and we use Mark 1:1-8

We are going to supplant a picture and remember this picture and imagery This is the generation of them that seek Him, that seek Your face, O Supplanter. Selah. Psalm 24:1-6

And it comes to pass that from the one who was barren and empty , a place of tears and wilderness
came John the baptist born to prepare the way

This place of solitude is a place that can be found in the heart, where you can be surrounded
by many people yet be in solitude and hear the one calling to you

"Make way for the King of Kings and The Lord of Lords"

Matthew 3:1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea

We hear the voice of one calling in that wilderness. "Prepare the way" And knowing not that God has prepared our lifes and hearts for this time of calling when we respond
and enter into that life where the broad way becomes narrow and where the rough ways begin to smooth

Once the path is clear and our hearts are ready we hear the voice although not always recognising the

This voice cries out in the wilderness, in the desert, in the valley of our hearts and lifes

And we respond and we enter the Temple through the valley of baca

And we begin to see as our eyes are fixed on the One directly in front of us, This is where we
receive our sight and we see Jesus

Now the valleys have been raised and the hills lowered and the paths made straight we can see
for the first time ahead of us, our eyesight is now to follow the one in front of us We no longer walk the crooked way but we walk the narrow way and God makes straight the path ahead of us

We once were blind but now we see ? what do we see ? ......Jesus

Luke 7:27 This is the one about whom it is written: "'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'

He raises up that "valley of weeping" so that our valley of weeping is turned to songs of joy

He raises up the downhearted in the valleys of their hearts and lifts them up He lowers the proud heart and humbles the mountain of the heart

He makes those who once walked in their own ways , now walk in His and so the crooked
path becomes a straight path

He renews the paths of the mind and replaces attitudes "supplants"

He brings down the proud and those who mock and those mountains are silenced

This John The Baptist in our lifes does'nt just prepare us for the arrival of the Lord in our lifes,
but continues to prepare us as we walk on with God for the next step

He does'nt just prepare the heart and pull down the strongholds and raise up the heart valleys in our
lifes but He also works in pulling down those that might oppose us and come up against us

He pulls down the strong man and raises up the poor


We hear maybe for the first time the voice of the one calling to us through the sea of voices and we
respond to the calling as babies and children from the mouths of babes and infants He ordains praise

We as new Children of God enter into the Temple as God Himself enters into ours

We respond and speak back to Him for the first time and we come into a new Kingdom where things
are the right way up or upside down, we now as Christians come into new values and a new way of
thinking as our minds begin to be renewed and the old things are passing away

And so now we find we are Christians walking in the Light of God We enter into the Kingdom of God The seed is planted in our hearts and that seed of faith needs to grow, How does it grow ?

Do we sit back and say "well thats it Im saved now " ?

Lets look briefly at THE UPSIDE DOWN KINGDOM

Luke 7:28 New International Version I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in
the kingdom of God is greater than he."

You see the old era of the prophets and the promise are lesser than the new Kingdom in Jesus

What is the greatest gift given in love ? who is a Prophet ?

Yet the one who prophesies of the coming King does so with a servant heart for he is a Prophet
and humbles himself before the one to come


What good is it if the outsude of the cup is clean yet the inside is still dirty ?

We fall at His feet and He washes us clean

Jesus came and still comes as a servant King but He will come as a Judge and He is above all
and to Him every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord to the glory of God the Father

Yet Jesus is the exact representation of the Father, if you have seen the Son you have seen the Father

Jesus served and still serves as does God the Father, you could say "He submits"

You might have read the story where Jesus washes the feet of the disciples !

Even in this day and age people might find it hard to wash someone elses foot or feet

But imagine in the that age and time in history when it was custom to wash your feet before entering
a mans house,

If you walked into a wealthy persons house you might have a servant wash your feet for you

And here we have the picture of the Servant King washing the feet of the disciples in John 13:6

6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"

In fact you can read about washing feet in Genesis 18:4 and Genesis 19:2 Exodus 40:31

And we can identify with this by reading Hebrews 10:22

And here we are, sons and daughters of the living God sprinkled and cleansed by the blood

This is our God the Servant King, This our Lord Jesus the Servant King, here are the children
of the servant King....

You say "How does God serve us ?"

Apart from being cleansed and washed by the blood of Jesus , God serves all the time, this is why Jesus
reflected His Father in this, God serves none stop , He never rests, in fact all things are sustained by His
powerful word

He gives us each new day, He gives us food and water, He gives us warmth , He gives us protection.

I wonder how many times He has saved us from situations we never knew about ?

How many things can you think of that God provides ? How many examples can you think of where God serves ?

While we argue at times about submission, God is providing the very air we breathe

We live in the upside down Kingdom compared to the values of the world, where good news is
the newspaper we read

Or should we say "The right side up Kingdom" In this Kingdom where Jesus is King we inherit and share in the inheritence, We become Sons and daughters of the living God

So now we have heard the voice of the one crying out in the wilderness and we have seen that this
one who calls out "There is one far greater than me"

It it surpassed that one greater came who was Jesus ploclaimed and announced, one born from a virgin
, the surpasser of all was born into the world who's name was Jesus

And from our barren empty and desolate lifes and hearts a Saviour is born

In our hearts when we become or became Christians Jesus is born And from the valley of tears comes a valley of joy

He gives us beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning the Spirit of praise for the spirit of heaviness

And so it surpassed that Jesus became the one in this desert wilderness of the heart and from this heart
can be born many in turn and in season

And we are born again clinging too......................Jesus

Rather should we say "Jesus is born in us as new Christians and this is our "Christmas" where we celebrate
the birth of Jesus in our hearts and where the whole of heaven sings out praises and rejoices as the mass
of angelic hosts surround the throne and rejoice over one lost sinner

This is heavens Christ mass

John 1:15 (New International Version)

15John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' "

He surpasses all understanding, He surpasses all wisdom of the world, And so Jesus is born in the heart and grows inside us, Or another image to plant is of us being children and growing up into maturity in the Kingdom

And so the Holy Spirit supplants into us, He takes over when we give Him permssion


The Rock

And so we rest on the Rock who is Christ and we seek Him and see Him who is the one who is higher than any other yet is the Servant King of all

Genesis 28:20

"If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to
eat and raiment to put on so that I return to my father's house, then the LORD shall be my God. THIS STONE THAT I HAVE SET FOR A PILLAR WILL BE GOD'S HOUSE, and of all that you given me, I will give you a tenth." This is the generation of them that seek Him, that seek Your face, O Jacob. Selah. - Psalm 24:1-6

And it came to pass that Jacob took Esau's birthright We can read about Jacob and Esau in Genesis 25:12-34 and Genesis 27:1-40

John 1:51 (New King James Version)

51 And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open,
and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

Now some discourage this metaphor of Jesus being the ladder to heaven , it seems to conjour up danger in theological circles, as if it could lead too salvation through works theology But this is simply a metaphor, its a word that conjours up a picture, a simpky picture or image in our minds
of Jesus and who Jesus is, you will find the bible is full of metaphors, Jesus can be a Shepherd, He is seen
as THE Gate, or The Lamb, again He can be seen as the Rock that Jacob rested on as we rest in Christ

He can be seen as the ladder and as Jacob Himself , these are all simple metaphors or pictures for
nothing can desribe Jesus as He surpasses all and supercedes all

So Jesus christ is the "Ladder" ?

Jesus is the ladder that Jacob gazed at as he rested upon the Rock ?

If you look at the translations you will see that some say "On the Son of Man"

And some say "Upon the Son of Man " !!

"the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

Because Jesus went down to the lowest regions of the earth even to the belly of the earth and
He was raised up to the highest place far above all

1 Corinthians 15:42-44 1 Corinthians 15:50-54 John 20:19-20 Acts 1:9 you might want to read 1 Corinthians 15:12-58

Jesus is the Mediator between God and man , there is only one way to God and that is through Jesus

1Timothy 2:5

"For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus-."

He is the ladder that reaches to God, not climbed by flesh, not climbed by works, not climbed by anything we can do but climbed through the blood of Jesus

This blood of Jesus gives us access to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords

Here we walk into the Temple ONLY though the blood that was shed

Jesus the Intercessor, Jesus the intercedor, Jesus the mediator,

Hebrews 7:25. "He is able to save forever those who draw near to God through him, because he always lives to make intercession for them".

Romans 8:34

Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died--more than that, who was raised to life--is at
the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.



And so it surpassed that Jacob took the birthright (Inherited or superseded)

And so it came to pass that John the baptist came preaching repentance

And so it surpassed that Jesus the "Surpasser" who surpasses all came to live among humankind
and He talks to the woman at the well

John 4:4-42 (New International Version)

11"Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it
himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?" Yes Jesus is greater than Jacob and supercedes and surpasses all

Here we have the Temple assistant, in Psalm 84, the sos or descendants of Korah

Korah who was swallowed up by the earth because of His proud heart

Korah who's family and followers rebelled not just against Moses but against the Lord

Such grace and mercy that the descendants of Korah should be the very Temple Assistants
in this Psalm , what responsibility to be in this position

Such grace the God should take those who are sinners and make them Saints

Such grace and mercy that He should choose us to be assistants ?

Far better to be a doorkeeper in the house of the Lord, far better to be a gatekeeper in Gods house
Than to live eslewhere, to be a servant with the gift of prophesy, to serve with the gift of Knowledge, to serve with the words
of God, to be of service with teaching, to be a servant with the gift of Love, To serve with the wisdom and
discernment of the Holy Spirit, to build instead of destroying, to encourage rather than to pull down

What a responsibility to be an assistant in the house of God

To serve in the smallest way and to be served, to wash the feet of those who need help that they might be able to serve alongside as brother and sister righteous before God

What a repsonsibility to reflect Jesus as Jesus reflects the Father and only through the blood of Christ
as we walk into the Temple and through the veil and into the Holy of Holies as sinners washed and
made Saints

What a responsibility and honour to serve the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords

Yes the samaritan woman knew of Jacob and the well and the sons thereafter who used the same well

But there was one who was indeed greater who was raised up from the well of death to eternal life,
the living water of Life who supercedes and surpasses all knowledge and we are partakers of that living water that we be filled with all the measure of the fullness of God

Do you know God can supercede any expectation ? He can supercede every dream ?

He can superceded any problem and replace it with power and authority which is His power and authority and we can tell the mountains to move and they will move

His authority and power is above all and supasses all

And so we as the Priest of the Most High walk into the Temple not built with human hands cleansed by
the blood of Jesus, we who are temple assistants walk to and thro in the Kingdom

We talk to God and God talks back , we sing to God and God sings back,we talk to Jesus and Jesus
intercedes on our behalf


And so it came to pass that we become new creations

Hosea 12:3

In the womb he grasped his brother's heel; as a man he struggled with God

Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be seperated; one will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger." Genesis 25:23

What grace to be grafted into the Vine !

In ancient times the oldest son received rights under the law. Deut. 21:15-17

Now we receive sonship by the supplanter who bore and bares our sin

You see we are saved by Gods grace and mercy through the blood of Jesus we the Jacobs of
Today come the Father God as heirs , as sons and daughters, why do we inherit ?

We inherit through Jesus, we come as children of God through the blood of Christ

Why is this ? why do we inherit ?

Because God supplants Jesus in us you see


The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: "Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will let you hear my words." So I went down to the potter's house, and there he was working at his wheel. And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter's hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do. Jer 18:1-4 RSV

2 Corinthians 4:7 (New International Version)

7But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power
is from God and not from us.

Romans 9:19-21

(New International Version)

19One of you will say to me: "Then why does God still blame us? For who resists his will?" 20But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? "Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, 'Why did you make me like this?' " 21Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump
of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?

Now you may say "Jacob is a deceiver ? " and supplanter means to take which is not yours ?

Well you know Jesus will come like a thief in the night !!...........

In biblical times it was the custom to name a child with a name that fitted the time and the place
In other words Jacob came out of the womb clinging to his brothers heal and so they named him
Jacob, Now is it not right that God who made all things and all people should claim the right of His
Children ?

Is it not right for God too change a name if He wants too or to give them a new name ?

Is it not right for God to take that which is His and supplant ? After all we do not grumble when Jesus takes the place of us,.... do we ?

We do not grumble when Jesus takes the punishment that we deserve we ?

We do not grumble when He bore the sin and the penalty for us do we ?

We do not grumble when He takes the anger of God away from us do we ?

We do not complain when God blesses us becasue of Jesus do we ?

O nooo...we might grumble when God leads us down paths we might not want to go down !

We might grumble when we go through situations and circumstances finding ourselves in places we do not want to be in !

We might grumble when at times we have too eat our own words and do things we said we would
NEVER DO, we have free will yes, God can can walk through walls but He cannot walk through wills,
Yes, but, but, but , don't forget God can cause things to happen

He can cause things too happen that would lead us (not always willingly) too and through trials and
tribulations, He will not force but then again He can a direct us and encourage us and intervene to an extent where we are taken to a place He wants us to go too in our lifes

He kind of takes the Rock and smashes it into that deep pool of water to cause ripples and to cause
situations in our lifes that might not be what we would want

Although He may not go against our will and we may well struggle and put up a fight, we may well
wrestle with Him, in the end don't forget He is the Lord

His will be done, maybe afterwards in walking with the limp we might just let Him do it !

You see Jacob was blessed by God and after all it was Gods to give and take away

Do we not take that and inherit that , which we do not deserve ?

Do we not take an inheritance that is not based on what we do or say ?

Do we not receive the right to be called sons and daughters of the most High based on what Jesus did
and does ?

Are we not saved by the blood ? and walk in faithful OBEDIENCE (Note)

Do we not walk into the Temple and stand before the King of Kings covered by the blood of Jesus ?

Does not God look at us and see Jesus ?

Never say "God deceives" or else you say "We deceive" and there is only one deceiver

Now lets look at a short passage from the story of Esau and Jacob

Genesis 27:22-24

22 Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, "The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau." 23 He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like
those of his brother Esau; so he blessed him. 24 "Are you really my son Esau?" he asked. God looks at us and see's Jesus

He looks at us and says "Are you my Son ? "


Leg Puller

Have you ever felt like you were clinging onto the Lord ?

Have you ever felt like you were just about holding on ?

We follow Him as the Rabbi and we walk in the dust of our Rabbi , the Great Rabbi

We follow in His footsteps until one day we have others following us

Genesis 32:22ff) Jacob wrestled with the angel of the LORD and prevailed against him. Jacob
clung to him and said, "I will not let you go unless you bless me" (v. 26). God changed his name from Jacob to "Israel

Israel walked with a limp ? he could no longer “run ahead.” he could no longer surpass but had to rely

From this time onwards he had to lean on a staff to walk, and he learned to lean on God to live. What a dependency ? but how can you run a race and win unless you have the surpasser ?

Who has already won ? is it not the leg puller ? the one who has already won the race ?

How can you ever do it in your own strength ? not now have a limp, you now have to rely and depent on the one who has won who is "The Son "

How could He enable us unless He had first disabled us ?

How could we ever have the ability unless He had first taken over or supplanted,superceded, and leg pulled ?

Now we who are His walk with a limp dependent on Him as we lean on Him who is the staff, the Rock

Now we receive the birthrightl

So Jacob is named "Israel" "one who perserveres, struggles, prevails,

Or One who is upright and righteous

To struggle with God yes, how many here struggle with God ?

Is your marraige always just right, you never argue do you ? you never struggle you ?

Of course we struggle with God and thus we have a limp , the great "leg puller" has us in the palm of His Hand


The Surpasser

2 Corinthians 9:14 (New International Version)

14And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you.

Ephesians 3:19

and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Philippians 4:7

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Do you know the story of Esau and Jacob ?

And God looks at us and He leans towards us and He see's Jesus

He does'nt look at the sin, He does'nt look at the past mistakes, He does'nt look at who we are .

He looks and see's the nails and the blood of Jesus, He see's the blood , the precious blood of
Jesus , Gods looks at us and He see's His Son, He looks at us and He see's a son or daughter

He looks at us and He see's Jesus His Son, He see's the blood and the scars and the marks and the

God makes us heirs and we inherit , being grafted into the vine we are partakers in this wonderful

We who were dead in our sins are made alive in Christ

God looks at us and see's Jesus His Son, His one and only Son

He looks at us and see's the Ladder reaching up to heaven, for He who ascended also descended and
rose up to be seated higher than any other and we too who were in ther miry clay are raised up with Him
to be seated in heavely places

He looks at us and see's His son , His daughter

Jacob come to me and rest on the Rock

Jacob come to me and see

Lord God in Jesus name we come to you covered by the blood, you cleanse us and make us Holy,
you make us priests to walk into the Temple and you walk into our Temple

You look at the "Jacob" and say "Welcome my son or daughter"

We trust in you Lord

You are the great surpasser who surpasses all knowledge and power and wisdom

Surpass our wills, your will be done in heaven and reflect on earth

Let us see ourselves as you see us

Let this not just be another bible study but let the Holy Spirit soak us with his love that we might serve
as you served In Jesus name amen
